The review workbook, step by step
Converting a statement takes three steps on one page. This guide says what to do in each, which fields to fill in for the files you need, and what every message on the way means.

The three steps
The converter page has two upload boxes because there are two different files. The first box takes your bank statement. The second takes the review workbook you get back from it, once you have checked it.
Convert your statement
In Step 1, upload the statement from your bank: a PDF, a scan or photos of the paper pages. The balances are checked and you see the rows on the page. This is the step that uses pages.
Check the review workbook
In Step 2, download the review workbook and open it in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets. Correct the rows marked for review, check the Statement details sheet, and save the file as .xlsx.
Upload it and download your files
In Step 3, on the same page, upload the workbook. Excel, CSV, CSV for import, QuickBooks (.qbo), OFX, Quicken (.qfx) and QIF are made from it. This step uses no pages, and you can repeat it as often as you need.
Step 1: Convert your statement
Drop the statement into the first box on the converter page and press Convert. A typical PDF takes 10 to 60 seconds; a scan or a photo takes about a minute. Keep the tab open until the result appears.
The result shows whether the balances matched and a preview of every row. Under it, Step 2 has the button Download the review workbook (.xlsx). Download it before you leave the page: we keep no copy of your statement or of its rows, so a closed tab cannot be brought back. The file is named after the statement period and ends in _review.xlsx, for example statement_2026-03-01_review.xlsx.
Step 2: Check the review workbook
The workbook has three sheets. You work on the first two; the third, How to use, repeats these instructions inside the file.
The Transactions sheet: correct the marked rows
Every row of the statement, oldest first. Only the rows with Review this row in the Check column need your attention; they are also shaded. Compare each one with your statement and correct the cell that is wrong. The Note column says what to look at.
| Column | What it holds | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Date | The transaction date | Correct it if it differs from the statement |
| Description | The text as printed | Correct it if it was misread |
| Money out | Payments, withdrawals, card purchases, as a positive number | Correct the amount; a row has Money out or Money in, never both |
| Money in | Deposits, refunds, payments to a card, as a positive number | Correct the amount |
| Balance | The balance printed beside the row | Leave it as it is, or blank where the statement prints none |
| Check | Matched, Review this row, or No balance to check | Nothing; it is ignored on upload |
| Note | What to look at on a marked row | Nothing; it is ignored on upload |
You can also sort or filter the rows, and add or delete rows. Keep the column headings and the sheet names as they are: the upload finds the columns by their headings.
The Statement details sheet: check the fields
One row per field, with four columns: Field, Value (the only column you change), Required and What it is. Most values are already filled in from the statement. Only one field is required; the others are needed only for some files.
| Field | Needed for | What to enter |
|---|---|---|
| Opening balance | Required for every file | The balance at the start of the statement, exactly as printed. On a card statement, the previous statement's balance. Check the value we filled in. |
| Account type | QBO, OFX, QFX and QIF | Choose from the drop-down list in the Value cell: Current / checking, Savings, Money market, Credit card or Line of credit. Already filled in; change it only if it is wrong. |
| Currency | QBO, OFX and QFX | The three-letter code, such as USD, GBP, EUR or TRY. It has to match the account you import into. |
| Account number | QBO, OFX and QFX | The account number from the statement, digits only. Always empty at first: type it in. Use the same number every month so your software recognises the account. |
| Closing balance | Optional | The balance at the end of the statement. Used to check that the rows add up. |
| Bank code (routing number, sort code or BSB) | Optional | Digits only, if the statement prints it. Leave it empty if you are not sure. |
| Bank name | Optional | The bank's name as it should appear inside the file. |
| Statement period, first day and last day | Optional | Left blank, the first and last transaction dates are used. |
| QuickBooks / Quicken bank code (INTU.BID) | Optional | Leave the default, 3000, unless your accountant gives you another code. |
| Date order in QIF and CSV files | Optional | Choose from the drop-down list: Day / month / year or Month / day / year. Pick the same order when your accounting software asks. |
What to fill in for the files you need
| You need | Fields that must have a value |
|---|---|
| Excel, CSV or CSV for import | Opening balance |
| QIF | Opening balance and Account type |
| QuickBooks (.qbo), OFX or Quicken (.qfx) | Opening balance, Account type, Currency and Account number |
Not sure which file your software takes? Which format do you need has a table and the import steps for QuickBooks and Xero.
Save the workbook as .xlsx
- Excel: File > Save. The file stays .xlsx.
- Numbers: File > Export To > Excel.
- Google Sheets: File > Download > Microsoft Excel (.xlsx).
- LibreOffice: File > Save As, with the file type Excel 2007-365 (.xlsx).
Do not save it as CSV or as an older .xls file: the upload reads .xlsx only, and a CSV has no Statement details sheet.
Step 3: Upload it and download your files
Go back to the converter page, the same tab or a new one, now or any day later. Drop the saved workbook into the second box, Upload the review workbook. It is checked again, and one of three things happens:
- A list headed "Fix these in the workbook and upload it again". Something prevents the files from being made, such as an empty opening balance or a date that cannot be read. Each line names the sheet and the cell or row. Fix them, save, and upload the workbook again.
- "Things worth a look", above the download buttons. The files can be made, but something may be wrong, such as a row that does not agree with the balance. Fix it and upload again, or download your files as they are.
- The download buttons. Press the one for each file you need. A greyed-out button says what it needs, for example "Needs the Account number on the Statement details sheet". Fill that in, save, and upload the workbook again.
The files contain the rows and details exactly as you confirmed them, with no Check or Note columns and no shading.
Messages and what to do
| You see | What it means and what to do |
|---|---|
| Opening balance is required: fill in cell … on the Statement details sheet | The Value cell of Opening balance is empty. Type the opening balance from the statement. |
| Account type must be one of the values in the cell's drop-down list | The cell holds text that is not one of the five choices. Select the cell and choose from the list. |
| Row … has both Money out and Money in | A transaction is one or the other. Clear the wrong cell. |
| Row …: the date in … could not be read | Type the date as 2026-03-05, or as a date cell. |
| Row … does not agree with the balance before it (off by …) | An amount on that row, or the row above it, differs from the statement. The difference usually points to one wrong digit, or to a missing or doubled row. |
| The rows end at …, but the closing balance on the Statement details sheet is … | Check the opening and closing balances first, then look for a missing row or an amount in the wrong column. |
| Every row adds up as a credit card statement, not as a bank account (or the reverse) | The Account type is wrong. Choose the other type from the drop-down list. |
| The rows are newest first; the files are written oldest first | Nothing to do: the files are put in date order for you. |
| This workbook has no Statement details sheet | You uploaded a finished Excel file instead of the review workbook. Upload the file whose name ends in _review.xlsx. |
| That's a statement, not the review workbook | A PDF or a photo was dropped into Step 3. Statements go in Step 1. |
| That's a workbook, not a statement | An Excel file was dropped into Step 1. Workbooks go in Step 3, and the message has a button that moves it there. |
Common mistakes
- Closing the page before downloading the review workbook. Nothing is kept on our side, so the conversion cannot be recovered. Download the workbook as soon as the result appears.
- Converting the statement again to get another format. Not needed, and it uses pages again. Upload the same review workbook in Step 3 and choose another file.
- Uploading the finished Excel file instead of the review workbook. Only the file ending in _review.xlsx has the Statement details sheet the upload needs.
- Renaming a sheet or a column heading. The upload finds the rows by the headings Date, Description, Money out and Money in. Put them back as they were.
- Typing an amount with a minus sign in Money out. Both columns take positive numbers. A negative amount is moved to the other column and reported.
